Victorian Diamond Bee Brooch with Sapphires, circa 1870

This Brooch features a diamond set bee with two sapphires forming its body. There is a diamond set leaf on each end of the bar. Two red cabochon stones, possibly rubies but too small to test, are set as eyes. The top of the brooch is silver, as was the custom at this time, and the reverse is gold. The legs and antennae are also gold. The diamonds are a mix of old cut and rose diamonds. There is a safety catch on the pin which is pushed vertical when the brooch is in place to lock the pin.The Bee is a symbol of hard work, loyalty, and an industrious attitude, hence the saying ‘busy as a bee’! The Victorians loved jewellery based on Naturalistic themes and moral messages and so this sweet bee brooch may have been given as a reward or recognition of hard work or problems over come. Or simply a gift to someone who loved Bees!
